Councillor Ray Jones hearing concerns from his ward about ongoing gun violence

A Calgary councillor is concerned with the amount of violence he’s seeing in the city.

During question period, Ward five’s Ray Jones says he’s received a number of phone calls from concerned residents in his area.

“Well, they realize that they are targeted shootings. There’s very little information that can come from the police because of an ongoing investigation,” Jones said. “But people want to know because of the severity what’s been happening. At some point in time, we know that there’s going to be a random bullet go and it’s going to hit an innocent bystander.”

Mayor Naheed Nenshi said he’s had a number of briefings with police about the recent shootings.

“I am very confident that our police service, having been through what happened in ’05, ’06, ’07, ’08 and having broken the back of that kind of gang activity, knows exactly what they’re doing,” Nenshi said.

Nenshi said he’s nervous about the gunfire but police are addressing the issue and we should see an end to it soon.
