Calgarians win gold at Pan American Games

Canada has its first gold medals in track cycling at the Pan American Games.

Calgarians Kate O’Brien and Monique Sullivan topped Cuba in 33.959 seconds in the women’s team sprint to win the second gold medal of Thursday at the Cisco Milton Pan Am/Parapan Am Velodrome.

O’Brien, 26, is a graduate of the University of Calgary and in the winter, she competes in bobsleigh. Sullivan, also 26, took part in the 2012 Olympic Games in London and this marks her third Pan American appearance.

Canada races for gold in the women’s sprint later Thursday.
