Northern fire smoke flirts with Calgary

Those packing up for a bit of a road trip Canada Day may run into some pretty noticeable smoke.

Environment Canada is advising those with respiratory problems to prepare if they plan to head north or east of Calgary as haze from northern fires is quite thick in some areas of Alberta and in Saskatchewan.

660News meteorologist David Spence said the smoke will also be notable in Calgary at times.

“We do have a small amount of smoke coming in to the Calgary area now but the major smoke continues to go into southern Saskatchewan,” Spence said.

“At the upper levels there’s a northwesterly flow taking the smoke out of northern Alberta, northern Saskatchewan, directing it to the southern prairies, especially Saskatchewan and Manitoba and even down as far south as Arkansas and Oklahoma.”

Spence said there is probably more Alberta fire smoke in Arkansas than there is in Calgary.

“There may also be some smoke later [Tuesday] south of the city from a couple of small fires in the Rockies north of Banff,” Spence said.

Environment Canada forecasts a slight haze may increase in Calgary overnight and into the start of Canada Day.
