Intense weather leads to wide-spread power outages Tuesday

It was short, but intense.

A heavy rain storm caused flash flooding and led to a massive power outage in South Calgary Tuesday afternoon.

The power was knocked out in the communities of Kelvin Grove, Haysboro, Glenmore Park, Eagle Ridge, Chinook Park and Southwood for well over a half-hour.

Meteorologist David Spence says the area endured a lot of rain.

“Earlier when it went through the Chinook Mall region, it caused some fairly wide-spread flash flooding and parking lots and roadways, especially just to the east of the mall, all the way down to the Heritage LRT station and the Glenmore underpass,” said Spence.

“Glenmore eastbound, there’s some pretty good flooding underneath Macleod Trail, there’s a car stalled out there in the middle, the police are blocking it on the west side and there is a tow truck backing in there right now, trying to hook up but unfortunately he’s going to have to wade into the water, so it’s going to be awhile,” said 660News listener Steve.

Mayor Nenshi tweeted that while there was some minor flash flooding, the situation should be resolved in the next little while.
