Charges upgraded in deadly gas and dash

Charges have been upgraded in deadly gas and dash in Calgary earlier this month.

Joshua Cody Mitchell is now being charged with second-degree murder in the death of 35-year-old Maryam Rashidi.

He was originally charged with criminal negligence and dangerous driving causing death.

On June 7, Rashidi attempted to stop a stolen pickup, after its two occupants allegedly stole more than $100 of gas from a Centex Station on 16 Avenue N.W.

The truck struck and critically injured her. She later died in hospital.

Mitchell is also being charged with robbery and breaching his bail release conditions.

Dressed in blue prison garb, he made a brief appearance in court via CCTV Tuesday morning.

The matter has been put over until July 30, giving his lawyer time for disclosure.
