Team Canada’s loss still inspiring

Team Canada will not raise the FIFA Women’s World Cup Trophy on home turf, but there is still lots to be celebrated by the red-and-white team.

Canada was eliminated by sixth ranked England 2-1 in the quarterfinals, Saturday in Vancouver.

Christine Sinclair found the back of the net in the 42nd minute, but could not recover from two early British goals.

660’s Sandra Prusina says the girls should still hold their heads high despite the loss. “They’re obviously upset, but then you look into the stands and you see all that red, and you see all those kids that you’ve inspired and you can’t help but feel proud of what you’ve accomplished, even if you’re not hoisting the trophy.”

Floyd Salazar with the Vancouver Youth Soccer Association agreed.

He suggested win or lose, the players are inspiring future superstars to take up the sport.

Salazar said, “Because it’s on home soil and because you have the games local, you know, I think that will definitely result in increase involvement,” adding the loss is even more powerful than Team Canada’s bronze medal win at the 2012 London Olympics.

England advanced to the semi-finals against the defending World Cup Champions, Japan. The teams meet Wednesday in Edmonton.
