Calgarians sticking closer to home for summer vacations

Summer is an optimal time to take a break from work and get some rest and relaxation.

However, our vacations may be a lot more low-key this year, partly because of the oil slump and partly because we’re expecting some great weather.

A lot of Calgarians are opting for a stay-cation.

Leslie Kayter, the Travel Lady, says many people are waiting until fall to book their big getaways abroad.

Spain is becoming very appealing.

“Where they are paying, maybe $2500 to be able to go to Europe for three weeks, and it’s something new, and it’s something different,” she said.

Kayter predicts a lot of people will take short jaunts to places within Alberta and B.C. for July and August.

“A lot of people like to be at home during the summer, or go to the lake,” she said. “It’s unfortunate that in Canada our domestic airfares are so high due to lack of competition, so most people, I think, are going to be taking to the roads, with the low oil and gas prices,” she said.

The low Canadian dollar is an upside for some local businesses.

“I have heard through contacts at Alberta Tourism that numbers definitely are increasing and certainly the hotels in our popular areas like Banff and Lake Louise are pretty robust with their bookings,” she said.
