Summer swimming smarts: how to keep germs away from the pool

With summer officially here in the city, many Calgarians will no doubt be cooling off in one of the city’s public pools.

If you’re hesitant about what germs may be floating around, don’t worry; health officials say there’s a pretty low risk of catching anything at the splash pad, but there are some precautions you can take.

Alberta Health Services Medical Officer of Health Judy MacDonald says there are requirements in place for pool operators to make sure the water quality is appropriate, and the chemical balance correct.

“Public health inspectors are monitoring these things on a regular basis,” she said.

However, there is some responsibility for pool users.

She says parents shouldn’t take their kids for a swim if they aren’t feeling well.

“You’re potentially going to expose others to those germs, and while there are measures in place to respond to those kinds of incidents, it does take some time to put those into place,” MacDonald said.

Some tips if you are taking a dip: rinse before and after you get into the pool.

It’s good for your skin’s health to wash that chlorine off.
