Those left in emotional distress after 2013 flood recovering

The Calgary Counselling Centre says progress has been made two years after the flood.

In the height of the disaster, officials provided counselling services for 800 people affected by the waters for a total of almost 2,900 sessions.

CEO Dr. Robbie Babins-Wagner tells 660News they’ve crunched the figures, 50 per cent of those clients say they are no longer in distress.

Another 25 per cent are considered stable.

“Meaning that they’re having the normal stresses of everyday life, that we all would have on an ongoing basis,” Babins-Wagner said. “So, we think the fact that we would have seen that kind of results at a bout 75 per cent of the folks — that’s huge.”

Assuming we don’t have any other natural disasters, she says, numbers should continue to fall.

However, you can’t predict when people might seek out help, and Babins-Wagner fully expects they could be taking new flood-affected clients into next year.
