Body-checking a hot topic at Hockey Alberta conference

Body checking will be on the agenda as officials, coaches, and others involved in minor hockey gather for the Hockey Alberta AGM and Conference this weekend.

The topic has been a hot one over the past couple years as some communities banned the physical side of the game at the Bantam level.

Executive Director Rob Litwinski said the organization will be talking about body checking and how to handle the rules around it at different levels.

He adds, a resolution won’t be in the works anytime soon, but the organization will be in close communication with nine volunteer groups trying different things around hitting in the game.

“We’re trying to collect information over the course of the next year, information on the topic and see how it’s going, and for those who aren’t prepared to make any of those decision yet, let them hear from some of the associations that have and why,” Litwinski said.

Hockey Alberta will possibly look at province-wide mandates next year.

This weekend’s conference kicks off Friday night with a special address from Calgary Flames Executive, Brian Burke.

Anyone is invited to register here.
