Charges to be laid against 20 year old Calgary man in fatal gas and dash

Calgary Police say they are going to be laying a slew of charges against a 20 year old man who is believed to be the driver in a fatal “gas and dash” Sunday morning.

They can’t identify him until his next court appearance but he will be charged with criminal negligence causing death, hit and run causing death, dangerous driving causing death, possession of stolen property over $5,000 and theft.

Investigators add further charges may be laid.

The announcement comes following a brief stand-off last night in a Beddington home where two suspects were located.

At approximately 8 p.m. information led them to the property and two reported to be inside the stolen truck at the time.

The Crown has instructed police not to lay charges against the 16 year old passenger.

Tips from the public led officers to the stolen truck in the 3800 block of Vancouver Crescent N.W. and it’s now being examined for forensic evidence.

It all stems from an incident Sunday where a stolen 2006 Ford Super Duty pick-up truck left the Centex Gas station in the 1700 block of 16th Avenue N.W. without paying for the fuel.

It headed westbound on 16th Avenue and pulled into a parking lot one block west of the station.

35 year old Maryam Rashidi, the Centex attendant, by that point had tracked down the vehicle and attempted to prevent them from driving away by standing in front of the vehicle.

The driver struck her as he tried to leave the lot, carrying her roughly 15 metres before she was thrown off the hood and into the middle westbound lane of 16th Avenue.

She was then run over by the truck as the men inside attempted to make their get away.

Calgary Police are thanking the public and media for their help during the investigation.
