Hockey Calgary expanding body-checking ban to include some bantam levels

Attention hockey parents.

On top of a ban already on body-checking in peewee, Hockey Calgary says it is eliminating body-checking at many levels in bantam.

Starting next season, players in bantam-4 and below will no longer be allowed to check.

Hockey Calgary executive director Kevin Kobelka said they even considered expanding that at higher ages.

“We also looked at removing it at the midget division as well, and that vote did not pass,” he said. “We have looked at it, we have tabled it to review again next year, but at the present time we have maintained body-checking at the full midget level.”

He adds there was a lot of research and consultation in this division.

Body-checking is already banned at all levels in peewee.
