Hail Suppression Team ready for another season of severe storms in AB

Alberta’s Hail Suppression team is now in flight.

Five aircrafts started work cloud seeding Monday, and will be trying to reduce the intensity of any future hail storms, well into September.

It’s been an expensive few years for victims of hail storms in Calgary.

August 7th, 2014 was the most challenging year for the project, as three storms hit Airdrie in one day causing $500-million in damage.

It’s been an expensive few years for victims of hail storms in this area.

“The severity has really ramped up in the last seven years,” Project Director Terry Krauss says.

He says the fast growing population has also led to more money being racked up in damages.

“If the September 7, 1991 storm would strike Calgary today, the estimated damage would be more than $1-billion,” Krauss said.

Krauss says while the toll continues to be high, it could be much worse without the suppression team’s efforts, which have shown to reduce the intensity of a hail storm by 20 per cent.
