Wildfire hazard drops in nothern Alberta

Rain and higher humidity levels has helped to drop the wildfire hazard in parts of northern Alberta from extreme to moderate which allowed crews to snuff out more fires over the weekend.

As of 10 a.m. Monday morning, 35 fires were burning with only five listed as out of control.

The largest wildfire, on the Cold Lake Air Weapons Range, is still out of control but there was no new growth reported Sunday and fire officials think they have about 30 percent of the more than 31-thousand hectare fire contained.

Cenovus, which evacuated about 18-hundred people from its Foster Creek oilsands facility in that area, says the Department of National Defence has given approval for emergency teams to assess damage to power lines and assess the risk in the area.

Once that is complete and things are safe, a few Cenovus staff will be allowed in to Foster Creek to inspect the facility and begin start up procedures.
