Woman dies after being hit by vehicle on Macleod Trail

An 82-year-old woman has died of her injuries after being struck by a smaller-style SUV along Macleod Trail south.

Around 10:30 a.m., Sgt. Mike tur Kuile said the woman was walking on southbound on the sidewalk approaching the intersection of 15th Ave., when a 2006 Jeep Liberty was going eastbound on 15th, paused at the stop sign and started to turn north onto Macleod.

That’s when the collision happened and EMS rushed the woman to Foothills Hospital in serious, potentially life-threatening condition, but shortly before 2 p.m. she was pronounced dead.

Police are looking over CCTV footage and speaking to witnesses, but alcohol, speed, drugs and distracted driving have been ruled out.

“We’ve been through this how many times before? Countless,” tur Kuile said. “This clearly comes down in almost every case to 50-50 responsibility in the respect that if you’re a pedestrian, yes you have the right of way when you enter the roadway into a crosswalk or an unmarked intersection, but then you’re competing against a 2,500 or 3,500-pound vehicle and you may be in the right, but you’re seriously going to get injured or killed.”

“Conversely with motor vehicle operators regardless of what kind of vehicle it is, you have to take that extra moment of pause to confirm that the way is clear and that it’s safe to concede.”

He added the driver has been cooperative throughout the investigation and tried to help the victim along with other witnesses when the collision happened.

The victim’s name is not being announced right now.

“The investigation will determine what charges, if appropriate will be laid, and once that’s done, if it’s deemed necessary, then we will release the name of the driver,” tur Kuile said, adding potential drives range from a traffic charge of failing to yield to a pedestrian to potentially a criminal charge if there’s sufficient evidence.
