Calgary shooting turns into homicide after victim dies in hospital

The victim involved in the morning shooting at Calgary’s Willow Park Centre has died in the city’s latest homicide.

The shooting occurred around 10:45 Wednesday morning in the lobby of the strip mall at 103 Avenue and Bonaventure Dr. S.E.

Duty Insp. Michael Watterston said at this point there is no one in custody or persons of interest.

“It does not appear the shooting was random,” he said, adding many parking lots in the area are still closed off.

Homicide detectives are currently going over CCTV footage and they have already spoken to over a dozen witnesses.

Watterston said there isn’t a description of a suspect at this point and it’s not clear what the victim was doing at the time.

“We’ll try to establish the behaviours of the individuals involved, what the plans for the day were, what they were up to,” he said, adding a motive is also unclear.

Officers said earlier in the day that at least two shots were fired in the area.

The nearby Willow Park Elementary School was locked down as a precaution.
