Health officials are investigating an outbreak of Salmonella in Alberta related to contact with live baby poultry originating from an Alberta hatchery.
They are currently 34 cases across three provinces, 17 in Alberta, 13 in BC and 4 in Saskatchewan.
The Public Health Agency of Canada says the risk to Canadians is low but wants to remind anyone who may have come into contact with live poultry to take precautions.
You can get Salmonella from a bird, its droppings or from environments where birds have been.
It’s very important to always wash your hands immediately after handling birds, cleaning up after them or being in an area where birds have been.
Alberta Agriculture and Forestry is leading the investigation and is working closely with the Alberta hatchery to determine the source of the infection.
