Inglewood’s wish list for 100-year-old bridge

Calling it ‘past its prime’ might be an understatement.

The time has come to replace the more than century-old 12th Street bridge connecting the Inglewood neighbourhood to the Calgary Zoo.

It is the first of two aging Inglewood corridors that will have to be rebuilt; meaning those living and working in the area are in store for a more challenging commute starting in 2016.

L. J. Robertson, redevelopment chair with the Inglewood Community Association, told 660News they haven’t seen any plans yet but they have some hopes.

“We would like to make sure that the new bridge interfaces well with the community and part of that is making a gentler transition than there is right now. Quite often now, when traffic comes off of the bridge into the community, there is a real acceleration and speed,” Robertson said.

She joked that might be because people are trying to get away from the narrow lanes.

“While the bridge is going, we would like to see something that acknowledges the fact that we did have that bridge for 110 years. We are not anticipating a $28-million boondoggle, so we just hope that it’s something that will be attractive.”

The City is holding an open house information meeting on Wednesday, May 27th, from 6-9 p.m. at the Inglewood Community Association.
