Local veterinarian lends voice to backyard chicken debate

With the big chicken debate about to get underway at city hall, a Calgary veterinarian is throwing her support behind a possible pilot project.

Allowing backyard chicken coops within city limits continues to be a controversial issue, but Dr. Leticia Materi, who treats exotic animals and birds, thinks it’s a great idea.

“Some people feel very disconnected to where their food is coming from. I think being able to have small coops in the backyard allow people to see where the eggs are coming from, the health status of the flock, what those animals are exposed to in terms of diet and medication,” she said.

If the project gets approved Monday by council, the experiment will run for a year beginning in June.
