City’s trash target off the mark

The City of Calgary is likely going to miss its 2020 target for waste diversion.

The plan was to divert 80 per cent of all waste from landfills by then, but Dick Ebersohn with Waste and Recycling tells 660News, the number will be lower.

“We are currently standing at an overall diversion of 30 per cent,” he said. “If we look forward with the data that we’ve collected and also understanding that we might not include certain program, we see ourselves reaching 60 per cent by the year 2020.”

He said once the green bins to collect organics roll out in 2017, they’ll be over 60 per cent for single family homes, but more work needs to be done in the multi-family, institutional and commercial sectors.

Calgary is behind a number of other Canadian cities for waste diversion, but Ebersohn said it’s only taken five years to hit the mark it took other municipalities 30 years to reach.
