Canadian tax process getting too complicated: study

Completing taxes in Canada is a lot harder than it used to be.

According to a study completed by the Fraser Institute the tax system is much more difficult to understand than it was in the 1990’s.

Director of Fiscal studies Charles Lammam says it’s due to continued growth in legislation around taxes.

“If you just look at the Federal Income Tax Act, it is literally growing in size. In fact, we looked at the growth from 1990 to 2014 we found that the area that legislation covers grew by 62 per cent,” Lammam said.

Lammam adds the government should find ways to help simplify the tax system.

He says that would help Canadians save time and money during tax season.
