A slow ski season? It all depends on who you ask

Warm weather has caused rumours to spread that ski hills have been struggling this year.

Powder Matt from Nakiska told 660News the rumors are wrong.

“Nakiska has just been absolutely amazing and we’re still going strong. We’ve got skiing, riding all the way up to May 3rd with two added bonus weekends because of incredible conditions at the resort,” Matt said.

Lindsay Gallagher with Sunshine Mountain Resort said they’ve managed to avoid the rumours that might deter people from heading to the hill.

“Word spread pretty quickly, which resorts do have the snow and so I think we were able to sort of capitalize on that and to have some people maybe stick closer to home,” Gallagher said.

Dan Markum, Director of Brand and Communications at Lake Louise told 660News they’ve had a good snowfall this season. Their biggest problem is luring people away from the golf course.

Markum said, while it might be warm in Calgary, it’s still below zero on the hill and people can take advantage of the conditions.

Several resorts in western Canada struggle with low snow amounts and melting conditions for the bulk of the main season.

Castle Mountain was forced to shut down months early due to the in climate weather.

Most resorts report the success of the ski season is down slightly from last year but indicate the perception is off due to a few years of excellent snowfall previous to the 2014/2015 season.
