Spur festival hopes to spark community dialogue

The future of Alberta politics, the reliability of food production, and sports in the community – these are just some of the topics up for discussion starting Thursday at the Spur Festival in Calgary.

The aim is to provide an opportunity for conversation, and a catalyst for change.

Festival director Helen Walsh says studies show more people are living in cities, and are less engaged in their communities.

“As people, we’re at the loneliest we’ve ever been in human evolution, which is a little scary when you think about the fact that we all live in cities together,” Walsh said. “Our format is very much designed to counteract that loneliness. So you come, but you don’t just passively listen, we want you to respond, we want you to engage, we want you to be part of the activity, part of that conversation.”

Some of the panelists include former Wildrose leader Danielle Smith, the Chair of Policy Studies at Mount Royal University Duane Bratt, Colby Cosh with Maclean’s Magazine, and Kris Vester, the president of Slow Food Calgary.
