Calgary police, along with Kingston officers, make an arrest connected to a 20 year old cold case

A Kingston, Ontario man has been arrested, in connected to a Calgary kidnapping and sexual assault case from 1995.

53 year old Wayne Howard Bernard was taken into custody in Kingston, Saturday after a standoff with police officers. At the time he was alleged to have taken a hostage.

Back on the morning of March 28th, 1995, a woman in her 50’s was working in a restaurant in the 1100 block of Macleod Trail South.

Police say a man forced his way into the closed business, assaulted her, forced her into her parked vehicle and drove her to the outskirts of Calgary.

That’s when the reported sexual assualt happened, leaving the woman on the side of the road.

She was able to flag down a passing car. That driver took her to her home, where the victim called 9-1-1.

Investigators were unable at the time to identify the offender, but they continued to work on the case and finally received a match from the DNA data bank, linking Bernard to the crime.

Bernard is facing multiple charges including commercial break and enter, sexual assault, sexual assault with a weapon, kidnapping, threats to kill, robbery, and dangerous operation of motor vehicle.
