One person dead at SE Calgary home, seven others rushed to hospital with CO poisoning

One man is dead and seven others are in hospital after a suspected carbon monoxide poisoning in southeast Calgary.

Multiple emergency crews attended a multi-home building on Elgin Way in McKenzie Towne around 10:15 a.m. after multiple reports of people feeling ill.

Of those sent to hospital, four were children between the age of one and four but all were in stable, non life-threatening condition.

It’s believed the deceased died of self-inflicted injury and Duty Insp. Joel Matthews explained where the fumes came from.

“There was a car that was running for an extended period of time and of course when a vehicle runs in a space that may be enclosed, there is going to be a quick buildup of exhaust fumes,” he said.

Matthews said one of their first calls was from a mother in a townhouse who said she smelled very strong fumes and while calling police, she took her child to the doctor.

At this point, any possible connection between the deceased and others affected is unclear.
