Prentice’s recommitment to build schools great, but not far enough: CAPSC

A parents group, hoping kids will get some elbow room in Calgary’s rapidly growing student body, are feeling assured by the premier’s visit to a northeast construction site Tuesday.

The president of the Calgary Association of Parents and School Councils (CAPSC), said they’re thrilled Jim Prentice personally recommitted funding for 56 new schools.

John Pantazopoulos told 660News, the future still holds a lot of concern.

“The problem is 12,000 kids are coming into the school system in Alberta and what they’re funding are schools that were needed back in 2010, 11, 12, 13. It doesn’t do anything for the kids that are going to be coming into the system in the next three to four to five years,” Pantazopoulos said.

The association hosted a forum Tuesday evening for Ward 11 and 13 Board of Education trustee candidates at Chinook Park School.

Pantazopoulos said the main issues are the same for all parents across the city, the lack of a budget increase, class sizes, school repairs and upgrades.
