Classic design and Canadian terrain inspire new national soccer kit

Ahead of the Women’s World Cup and Gold Cup, Umbro Canada unveiled the new home jersey for the Canadian national soccer teams.

The red kit is a combination of holding onto a well-known Canadian tradition of simplicity, while adding some modern design.

“We added a little bit of colour contrast on the top and a white band across the chest to give it some surface detail,” Mike Shoemaker, vice president of Umbro Canada, said.

“We wanted something that would stand for what Canada is. We wanted something to be very classy and something that’s very comfortable. The jersey has a cotton feel to it, but it’s actually spun polyester that’s terrific at managing moisture.”

Canadian fans may also notice a change in the font from previous versions.

“The font was developed by Canada Soccer and we obviously had some input into it as well,” he explained.

“We just felt new font, new jersey and a great start for it being Women’s World Cup year. The background of the font comes from the rugged nature and ice of Northern Canada and is the emphasis they took when they were designing those name and number kits.”

Christine Sinclair is the number one jersey ordered on their website, but if fans are interested, they can customize their own.

“You can go and create a jersey to honour your favorite player,” Shoemaker said. “Or you can put your own name on the back. Anything that’s respectful we’ll put on a jersey and be happy to ship it out.”

The company is slated to release a white version in May.
