Wildrose sounds the alarm over “March Madness” of P.C. spending

Alberta’s Wildrose is sounding the alarm over the annual “March Madness” spending frenzy that they allege has been allowed to carry on at the Legislature, under the current Progressive Conservative government.

According to the Official Opposition, they’ve uncovered $104-million in additional, wasteful spending, in a spree that’s designed to run government budgets dry.

In total, spending last March was up by 10,661 per cent.

Interim Leader Heather Forsyth says it’s Premier Jim Prentice who should be looking in the mirror.

“It’s the P.C. government who has spent like drunken sailors over the last 44 years, all of the sudden everything is coming to a grinding halt and he blames Albertans,” she said. “Albertans did not make the budget approvals that this Premier has done, now he’s asking Albertans to pay for the prices they’ve made.”

Some of the line items they uncovered include:

– $80,893 for new chairs in the Legislature
– $34,081 for skate guards
– $28,235 for new park benches
– $9,676 for fine china in the Premier’s office
– $5,881 on napkins and linen for the Premier’s office

“Whether it was the way Redford spent money, whether it was the way Premier Stelmach spent money, Premier Hancock for that matter, you’re still the head of the family and responsible for that family,” said Forsyth.

The Wildrose adds it specifically didn’t include figures from Municipal Affairs or Environment and Sustainable Resource Development, which were affected by flood and fire spending.
