Canadian Taxpayers Federation expects higher taxes with new Alberta budget

The Prentice government is announcing its first budget later this week, and the Canadian Taxpayers Federation is expecting tax rates to be boosted along with some spending cuts.

The CTF doesn’t think the government should be raising taxes at all. Scott Hennig, acting Alberta director of the CTF, believes a sales tax is off the table, as are business tax increases. He does think many other levies will be increased though.

“Increases to the income tax, we could see increases to sin taxes, like liquor and tobacco, or we could see the re-introduction of health care premiums.” Hennig said. “So there could be a whole swath of taxes that this government considering raising.”

Hennig also questions the $80,000 expense by the premier on a televised address Tuesday night, especially when it seems that an election will be called just days after the budget is tabled.
