Advocacy group calls on government to ban Menthol

The health advocacy group, Banding Against Menthol, is calling on Health Minister Stephen Mandel to ban menthol in all tobacco products sold in Alberta.

The group is made up of citizens including paediatric lung specialists, respiratory therapists, unit clerks, health science students, former smokers, professors, and health researchers.

Banding Against Menthol members said Bill 206 is aimed at discouraging youth from starting to use tobacco products but it does not ban the flavouring which the group says helps establish a nicotine addiction.

According to Alberta Health Services, smoking is the leading cause of preventable illness, disability and death in Alberta.
