Rude awakening for NW Residents

Fire alarms, sirens and flashing lights started the day for some northwest residents, Thursday morning.

About a dozen people were evacuated from a Huntington Hills town house complex around 6:00 a.m., when Calgary Fire crews arrived to tend to a blaze in a townhouse complex along 72 Avenue northwest.

A man in his twenties was transported to hospital for smoke inhalation. His father was treated by EMS on scene.

Batallion Chief John Cherwenuik says it’s not clear if the two men heard the fire alarm.

“I believe the father’s alarm clock may have gone off and notified him. We’ve been trying to find out if he actually heard the smoke alarms, but it may have been damaged by that point. We haven’t got any feedback on that,” explained Cherwenuik.

Jody Ramsay lives in the complex, “I woke up, I came out of sleep, you know, I guess I wasn’t feeling that well,” she says, “and then I heard a horn and I thought that sounds close, and what would that be? And then I smelt the smoke and I put two and two together, that’s the horn from the fire truck, ” she recalls, “then I got up and I went to my balcony and I looked out and that’s when they told me to get out.”

Damage was significant to the interior of one of the town homes, but is not visible from the outside and was contained to the suite of origin.

Investigators are looking into the cause of the fire.
