Vigil marks ten years since Mayerthorpe tragedy

A small candlelight vigil will be held at a memorial in Mayerthorpe Tuesday night, for four fallen RCMP officers killed in the line of duty a decade ago.

Anthony Gordon, Leo Johnston, Brock Myrol and Peter Schiemann were shot down on March 3, 2005 by James Roszko as they tried to execute a property seizure on his farm.

It is still the highest number of casualties the RCMP has seen in one day.

Albert Schalm was the mayor at the time of the tragedy and tells 660News for some, the ten years have gone by very quickly.

For others, it has felt like much longer.

“Everybody reacts to grief in different ways and everybody will see it in different ways and some of us who were more involved, (and are) closer to it will see it differently from someone who is relatively new to the community,” Schalm said.

Margret Thibault, President of the Fallen Four Memorial Society, admits some people have become tired of talking about it.

“Tired of being the focus, because we are on stage for all the wrong reasons in Mayerthorpe, and people thought it would go away,” she said.

She says it’s their job to show this one action by one person does not define the community.
