Local Muslims talk end to extremism at forum

Calgary’s Muslim community reached out Sunday night, to fight back against extremism.

Local Islamic leaders met with other faith groups, police, university officials and politicians to talk about radicalization.

Muslims Against Terrorism say they need help to figure out who is brainwashing youth into joining terror groups, and help prevent it.

Atthar Mahmoud tells City News, the biggest message they want to get across is that killing in the name of Islam is wrong.

“You are not claiming being a better Muslim by killing someone. In the Qur’an it does not allow us,” he said. “Again, those people may look like us, look Middle Eastern or Muslim, the may carry the name of a Muslim, but they are not Muslims.”

At least five Calgarians have joined extremist groups, with at least four being killed overseas.
