The Health Minister cautions Canadians after the deaths of two young children in Fort McMurray

Health Canada has issued a statement, asking Canadians not to use unregistered unapproved chemicals.

It comes after the death of two young children in Fort McMurray.

An eight month old girl and her two year old brother passed away after their mother used Phosphine, brought from Pakistan, to try and kill bed bugs in their home.

The funeral for the two year old boy is being held today in Fort McMurray after dying in an Edmonton hospital on Thursday.

Health Minister Rona Ambrose addressed the Calgary Chamber of Commerce.

Along with offering her condolences, she said it’s important Canadians heed Health Canada’s warning.

“These are very serious chemicals. There are things you can buy at Home Depot that if you don’t use properly can kill you and if it is for commercial use, make sure it’s only being used by people who are trained to use it.”

Three other young siblings were also hospitalized in the incident and two are now out of hospital.
