Mourners prepare for second funeral related to phosphine poisoning

An Edmonton mosque is preparing for another funeral for a child today, just a day after one for an eight-month-old baby.

A second child has passed away from phosphine poisoning in hospital after being exposed to the powder last weekend at his family home in Fort McMurray.

The mother was using the spray from Pakistan to kill bed bugs.

The eight-month-old died on Sunday, and news hit of the two-year-old’s death during the funeral yesterday.

Fort McMurray MLA Mike Allen tells CityNews the family is understandably devastated.

“No parent should have to bury their child,” Allen said. “This is a very tragic loss, to see such a tiny little casket.”

Allen said everyone is hoping and praying the other children will recover fully, but news of the second death makes it so much harder.

“We just hope the others are strong, I know the two children that were in Fort McMurray, I visited them on Monday and they were still sick, but improving,” he said. “We’re just all sending our prayers out that there’s a speedy recovery there.”
