Terror expert tries to quell fears after latest threat

Is the terrorism threat from Al Shabaab real?

“There is no reason to believe an attack is imminent.”

That coming from terrorism and radicalization expert at the University of Calgary, Michael Zekulin.

He tells Breakfast Television this is a recruitment tool along with a threat.

“It’s basically a win-win for them. If they can inspire somebody to act on their behalf, well then that’s a big deal for them. At the same time if they’re able to simply create anxiety amongst a small proportion who are thinking ‘better avoid West Edmonton Mall’, then they’re also winning.”

He said we do need to be vigilant about lone wolf attacks but one of the goals of these groups is to prevent people from living their everyday lives.
