Tanker spills gasoline on QE2

Traffic headaches and environmental concerns north of Calgary, after a tanker truck carrying gasoline crashed on the QE2.

Reports indicate the driver of the truck fell asleep before drifting into the centre median and jack-knifing, then rolling the truck at around 4 a.m. Tuesday.

No one was injured.

The big concern now is the 13,000 litres of gas that spilled out of the truck into nearby wetlands.

It’s expected to take weeks to fully understand the impact and to clean it up.

“Unfortunately, there was a culvert in the area that allowed the fuel to drain into nearby wetlands,” Rockyview County Spokesperson Grant Kaiser said.

Alberta Environment and Alberta Emergency Management Agency crews are on scene to monitor the impact on the wetlands.

Both directions of the QE2 were closed between Highway 566 and Stoney Trail until around 12:30 p.m.

Alternate routes south into Calgary include Range Road 13, which turns into Centre Street, or Dwight McLellan Trail which is the extension of Metis Trail.
