Wildrose and NDP slam PCs over sunshine list omissions

Alberta’s opposition parties are slamming the PCs over their decision to pull back on which employees to put on a sunshine list, which shows which public workers are making $100,000 or more.

Back in 2013, the government introduced plans to have all government agencies, such as AHS and school boards, to disclose which employees were making that much money.

Now only government employees will be subject to the list.

Wildrose Justice Critic Shayne Saskiw tells CityNews this flies in the face of Premier Jim Prentice’s promise to be transparent.

“Health care represents a large portion of Alberta’s budget, almost a quarter of it, yet they’re not disclosing the key salaries for key individuals, that shows that they’re not interested in being transparent at all,” he said. “We’re going to be going through a tough financial situation, where do you cut if you don’t know who is making those high amounts of money?”

Alberta NDP Leader Rachel Notley also told CityNews it’s an old PC move of protecting friends and insiders.

“At a time that he’s running around like a chicken with his head cut off trying to soften up regular Alberta families for a hit to the pocket book, at the same time he’s breaking a promise to disclose to those very same Albertans the salaries of Alberta’s most highly-paid public officials,” she said. “He just doesn’t get whose side he should be on.”
