Program helps cancer patients with stress

A program at the Tom Baker Centre is promising to help address the emotional and spiritual needs of cancer patients.

Front line staff started screening patients for symptoms of distress two years ago, including: anger, frustration, anxiety, and depression.

Dr. Linda Watson tells City News, once any distress is identified solutions are offered to help cope with the problem.

“We offer support: so ‘do you need a referral? Can we get you in touch with a nutritionist? Are there things that we can do to help you with these areas?’ and then we act on that,” she said.

The program is funded by the Alberta Cancer Foundation and is offered at 17 cancer centres across the province.
