Alberta Tory backbencher Rob Anderson says Mounties have stepped up security and monitoring of his home and office following a phone threat to kill him.
He says he has received numerous “disturbing” emails and phone calls since he and eight other Wildrose MLAs crossed the floor.
Anderson announced this week he will not seek re-election, in part, because of an angry reaction that followed his decision last month to join Premier Jim Prentice’s Progressive Conservatives.
The move dealt a grievous blow to Alberta’s Official Opposition, leaving it with five members versus 72 for the Tories.
RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Josee Valiquette declined to confirm if an investigation was underway.
Anderson says he will no longer comment on the investigation and will instead focus on helping Prentice with the next budget and lobby for a 24-hour health care for Airdrie.
