Gold-medal-winning Olympic men’s hockey team named CP Team of the Year

The men’s Olympic hockey team is the Canadian Press team of the year.

The squad that steamrolled through the Sochi Olympics on the way to a gold medal is the overwhelming choice by editors and broadcasters across the country.

Mike Babcock’s group, which beat Norway, Austria, Finland, Latvia, the United States and Sweden, received 36 votes to finish ahead of the women’s bobsled duo of Kaillie Humphries and Heather Moyes (10 votes) and the women’s hockey team (nine votes).
Canada outscored opponents 17-3, though the most convincing result may have been a 1-0 victory over the United States in the semifinals.
While scoring from forwards was a concern, defencemen Drew Doughty and Shea Weber more than made up for it with six points each.
In goal, Babcock called Carey Price’s play “spectacular” and thanks in part to skaters controlling the play in such a dominant fashion, his goals-against average was 0.59 and save percentage was .972.
