A city councillor says she’s hearing that the downturn in the market is already hurting citizens of Calgary.
Diane Colley-Urquhart tells City News many of her constituents have contacted her about the economy, but she’s still happy with the province’s stance on taxes.
“I’m starting to hear a lot of doom and gloom. I’m starting to hear of a number of people being laid off and let go,” she said. “I’m pleased that the province is not considering a sales tax to try to deal with revenue shortfalls.”
Meanwhile, the city’s mayor will speak to the Calgary Chamber of Commerce Thursday.
Naheed Nenshi will give his Annual State of Business in Calgary address over the lunch hour where he may also speak of low oil prices and how they affect the city’s operations.
