How can employers deal with sexual harassment in the workplace?

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – What can employers do to deal with sexual harassment in the workplace?

A recent poll found nearly 28 per cent of Canadians have experienced verbal harassment at work and 14 per cent have been victims of unwanted contact.

Irene Tsepnopoulos-Elhaimer with Women Against Violence Against Women Rape Crisis Centre says those numbers aren’t surprising.

She doesn’t think we really have a good understanding of what it means to be sexually harassed and so a lot of people don’t report what happens.

“Well there should be an absolute zero tolerance for sexual harassment in the workplace, and it’s part of the legislation for human rights.”

Tsepnopoulos-Elhaimer adds workplace cultures need to clear and available. “It has to be about being open and having those conversations, explaining what is required and what is expected in the workplace between men and women and our relationships.”

Many who chose not to speak to their employer say they preferred to deal with the issue on their own.

The poll by Angus Reid found many who chose not to go to their bosses preferred to deal with the issue themselves.
