Cold weather brings warnings to be prepared

Although travel isn’t recommended, anyone who has to drive is being reminded to have an emergency road kit on hand.

It should include food that won’t spoil, water in plastic bottles, a blanket, first aid kit, small shovel, and a flashlight.

Don Szarko with the AMA adds, make sure your cell phone is on hand as well.

“We talk about the ills of cell phones, but they can save your life in the event of having to call for an emergency,” he says.

There are also a number of items to keep in the trunk including tow rope, jumper cables and warning lights or flares.

Extra clothes, blankets and gloves, should also be nearby because when there’s a wind chill factor any exposed skin could quickly freeze and lead to frost bite.

Adam Loria with EMS tells 660News, it’s important to take the necessary precautions if you are going to be outside.

Anyone who might be working outdoors in this weather needs to remember to take breaks in a warm building or vehicle and dress in layers.

“Your body works very hard to regulate its temperature, so to help your body out, take periodic breaks in a warm environment. Down the road in a way, it could be life saving,” Loria says.

He adds although it might be quick to grab a coffee or hot chocolate on a cold day those drinks promote dehydration.

It’s better to drink water to hydrate and help your body which is already under stress because of the cold temps.
