Police block off 4th street as they deal with a bank-hold up

A Bank of Montreal in Mission, where police said employees locked themselves inside a room, was safely evacuated Wednesday evening after an alleged robbery.

Squad cars swarmed the area around 4th Street and 23 Ave S.W. at around 5 p.m. for what officers said appeared to be a bank robbery.

Roads in the area were shut down for about four hours as police asked the public to keep a safe distance for safety reasons.

Some nearby businesses were also evacuated as a precaution.

Police report the three suspects may have used firearms during the alleged stand-up before fleeing the scene on foot.

Three men were taken into custody around 6:30 p.m. a short distance away.

Duty Inspector Mike Tillotson said a small foot chase took place as the suspects reportedly ran in different directions.

According to investigators, bank staff remained safely locked within the room inside the bank during the robbery and response as officers made sure there were no other suspects inside the building.

Tillotson said one minor injury was reported from a possible fall no one else was hurt.

“My understanding is that they are shaken up, of course something like this can be very traumatic. We do have some support services for them that have been called out,” Tillotson said.
“Of course in an incident like this we do everything that we can to make sure that that their health and wellness is looked after.”

The Robbery Unit continues to investigate.
