Elderly man struck by Airdrie commuter bus downtown

An elderly man is fighting for his life in hospital after being struck by an Airdrie commuter bus in Calgary’s downtown core.

The victim was hit just before 7 a.m. Wednesday at 9th Avenue and Centre Street South.

“At the scene, we found a man, approximately 70 years old, who had sustained critical injuries. He’s been subsequently taken to the Foothills Hospital in critical, life-threatening condition,” says EMS spokesperson Stewart Brideaux.

Police say witnesses saw the man crossing northbound across 9th Avenue against the lights when he was struck, and confirm the victim was a window washer working in the area.

“The eastbound Airdrie commuter bus operated by a male in his 50’s with just one passenger on it at the time saw him too late, probably because of the clothing and was unable to stop in time and struck the pedestrian,” says Traffic Section Sgt. Joerg Gottschling.

9th Avenue between 1st Street SE and 1st Street SW was closed for three hours, but has since re-opened.
