One million more poppies already distributed in Canada this year

The Canadian poppy campaign hasn’t even been on for a week and already organizers are calling the number of poppies distributed astounding.

In just a few short days, Canadians have picked up one million more poppies than all of last year.

Eighteen million poppies were distributed across the country last year; this year, Canadians have already hit 19 million, and there is still a lot of time left.

President of The Canadian Legacy Project David Howard said the response has been amazing.

“Calgarians and Canadians have really rallied around our serving military and our veterans,” he said.

Dominion president of The Royal Canadian Legion Tom Eagles said Canadians have been very generous at the poppy box as well, and he expected donations will be up.

“Last year we put into the veterans and veterans’ families $14.5-million, so, yeah, I would think you’re going to see an increase,” he predicted.

He said even with the events in Ottawa and Montreal pushing remembrance to the front of everyone’s mind, support has been growing every year.

Howard said Canada could be doing more year round, like they do in the U.S.

“You can go to a football game and they recognize veterans before every game, and at airports veterans board first, so I don’t see why we can’t do the same here,” he said.
