Traffic lights in 16th Ave NE re-work concerning: City Councillor Ray Jones

He was the only dissenting vote at a committee meeting Wednesday; a Calgary city councillor sees problems with a multi-million dollar project along 16th Avenue in the northeast.

The $200-million plan calls for an interchange at 16th Avenue and 19th Street and adjustments to the interchanges at Deerfoot Trail and Barlow Trail.

Ward 5 Councillor Ray Jones said he has a problem with the proposal calling for new lights at Barlow Trail.

“The ramp right now that’s northbound to eastbound works very, very well and I can envision traffic being backed up right to Memorial Drive in the advent of traffic lights being there,” Jones said.

“We’ve got a functioning cloverleaf there right now that’s been working well for 60-plus years and we’re eliminating the clover leaf and kind of putting in almost like a diamond interchange.”

He said most of the public consultation over the past two years has focused on the 19th Street interchange and not much was said about Barlow.

The 16th Avenue Plan is still at least a decade away unless the city gets special funding from the province.
