Man shot and killed by police in downtown core

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has been called in to investigate after a man was shot and killed by Calgary Police.

The intense situation happened just after 2 a.m. Friday in Langin Place, a low-income housing complex on the corner of 4th Avenue and Macleod Trail.

Officers responded to a call that someone was threatening another man with a gun.

Police confronted a suspect on the second floor; it’s alleged the man then presented a weapon, and officers opened fire.

The weapon turned out to be an air-soft gun.

Matt lives in the building, and says he woke up to gunfire.

“Next thing I knew, Police were knocking on my door. I got up, went out, and there was Police all over the hallways with guns drawn and I was asked to vacate the building,” he said.

Many residents were temporarily evacuated during the incident, but most have been allowed to return home.

Smoke billowing from the complex is believed to have been caused by a pot left on a stove.
