Police standoff with man in transit bus

There were some tense moments for passengers on a Calgary Transit bus Friday night, after a man got on board with a weapon.

It happened shortly after 6 p.m. when the man boarded at Shouldice Bridge in the 5700 block of Bowness Road.

Det. Martin Taylor said he ordered all the passengers off the vehicle, then barricaded himself inside the bus with the driver.

“There was an incident on the bus at that location,” Taylor said, adding the incident came to an end after about 20 minutes with the use of non-lethal force by police. “There were no injuries to any parties and our Tactical Unit attended, they used what’s called the arwen, which is something that our tact units use.”

“It’s not a Taser, it’s not a baton, but it’s an item that they have available to them that they’re able to use which disables.”

They believe the man, who was taken into custody, was either drunk or had been using drugs.

No one was injured, but the incident temporarily shut down traffic on the Shouldice Bridge.
